Sustainability

At Kapara London, sustainability is not just a goal; it's a guiding principle. Committed to making a positive impact on society whilst minimising our impact on the environment, we recognise our responsibility to embrace sustainable practices in every facet of our operations.

We carefully research and select eco-friendly materials, prioritising natural fibres, low-impact dyes, and traditional techniques that support artisan communities. Every collection is made in small batches to reduce waste and ensure quality. Our production process champions slow fashion - fair wages, safe working conditions, and minimal environmental impact.

We know that true sustainability is a journey, not a destination. That’s why we’re always learning, adapting, and improving our practices - from how we source materials to how we package our products.

Kapara was built on purpose - and we’re proud to carry that purpose into every stitch, every season.

OUR FABRICS

ORGANIC COTTON

Organic cotton is grown without the use of synthetic pesticides or fertilisers, reducing chemical pollution and promoting soil health. By supporting biodiversity, organic cotton cultivation contributes to the conservation of local ecosystems. However, organic cotton does have its challenges - it generally requires more land and produces lower yields compared to conventional cotton, making it a less economically viable option for many farmers.

KALA COTTON

Kala Cotton, a traditional cotton variety native to India, celebrated for its sustainability and most commonly grown by smallholder farmers. Cultivated in the arid regions of Western India, Kala Cotton requires significantly less water compared to conventional cotton varieties - its resilience to drought and pests making it well-suited for cultivation in low-input, rain-fed farming systems.

BCI COTTON

Better Cotton Initiative (BCI) cotton is grown using sustainable farming practices that minimise water waste, reduce harmful chemicals, and support fair working conditions for farmers. This ensures a softer, high-quality fabric that’s kinder to both the planet and the people who make it.

COTTON LINEN

Cotton linen is a blend of cotton and linen fibers, combining the best qualities of both materials - the eco-friendly properties of linen, and the versatility of cotton. Derived from the flax plant, linen requires minimal water and pesticides to grow, making it an environmentally friendly choice. Cotton on the other hand, is a natural fibre that is highly breathable and durable.

MODAL

Modal is a type of rayon fabric made from the fibres of beech trees. The beech trees used to create modal are typically sourced from sustainably managed forests, where trees are replanted after harvesting. Once harvested, the production of modal uses a closed-loop process which ensures that the chemicals used in manufacturing are captured, recycled, and reused to minimise environmental impact. We love modal for its softness, breathability, and minimal environmental impact.

Zero Waste

At Kapara, we take a zero-waste approach by producing mindfully and minimising excess. Our women’s clothing and quilts are made to order or handcrafted in small batches to avoid overproduction. By selling exclusively through our website and pop-up shops, we can accurately gauge demand and create only what’s needed. We also repurpose fabric scraps into accessories like scrunchies and elephant bunting - ensuring nothing goes to waste, while encouraging a circular system.
